Classes are full! What are my options?
Indeed all of our 2026 Level 1 classes have filled. Sign up for our waitlist here. Spots do open up.
Do you have financial support for your courses?
Yes, we offer 5 scholarships per year. Applications closed for the 2025-26 season on December 15th, 2025. Applications for the 2026-27 season will open in fall 2026. To learn more about Patrol Fund scholarships, go here.
What do I need for class?
We have a list of all things needed for both field and classroom courses here.
Is there an age minimum for your courses?
Participants must be at least sixteen years old at the time of class AND their guardians must sign a waiver as well.
What is the recommended skiing ability for your avalanche courses?
Students are expected to be able to ski off-piste on blue and black runs in variable conditions. It will be much more enjoyable for students to focus on learning about avalanches, rather than stressing about keeping up with the rest of the class or even just getting down the hill!
What preparation is recommended for taking an avalanche course with the Patrol Fund?
We highly recommend that students practice setting up their backcountry gear before their course. This includes practicing putting skis/snowboards, skins, and boots in walk mode. This also includes at least three beacon drills before class. There are two beacon parks at Whitefish Mountain Resort: one at the summit and one on lower Gray Wolf on the backside. This is a great video with more beacon park instructions. We also send out course books about a month before each class, which students are expected to read. Students are not expected to be experts at using their backcountry gear! However, they will get more out of the class with a little prep work beforehand.
